Regional 2 Thames Round Up : Gameweek One

James Sarek10 Sep 2024 - 19:26

Reviewing the weekend's fixtures

The first round of fixtures in Regional 2 Thames is now complete - let's take a closer look at the results.

Aylesbury 17-41 London Scottish Lions

League newcomers London Scottish recorded an impressive away win against Aylesbury, scoring six tries in the process as they ended the match 41-17 victors.

The Lions moved into a comfortable 19-3 lead at half time through tries from Ollie Boyes, Ross Arthur and Gavin Kinder - before Aylesbury staged a comeback of sorts to pull the score back to 19-17. However, another try for Boyes just before the hour mark, followed by efforts from Fabian Thwaites and Finlay Hillicks in the last ten minutes, put the tie to bed as the away side came away with a bonus point win.

Beaconsfield 7-25 H.A.C

Beaconsfield - back at level 6 following an unbeaten promotion season in 2023/24 - didn't fare quite so well as Scottish, beaten by perennial league favourites, H.A.C, as the visitors were able to secure a bonus point, the Beaconsfield try coming from William Howells.

Beaconsfield will travel to London Scottish next week, with H.A.C playing under lights on Friday night at home to Old Haberdashers'.

Belsize Park 28-22 Old Haberdashers

Belsize Park - who finished second in Regional 2 Thames in last year's edition, missing out on promotion to Regional 1 by just two points - made a tentative but winning start to the season, beating Old Haberdashers by six points in Central London.

Belsize take four points from the fixture, the only side to win without a try bonus point across the weekend ; Habs secured a valuable losing bonus point.

London Irish Wild Geese 33-30 Grasshoppers

In what appears to be the best tie of the round, an excellent turnaround from London Irish Wild Geese saw them overturn a 20-5 half time deficit to eventually come away with a 33-30 win at the Hazlewood Centre in Sunbury On Thames.

Grasshoppers found themselves 15-0 to the good with 20 minutes played, tries coming from Deji Olajide and Jasper Rose with Chris Brown adding five more via a conversion and penalty. Irish got a score back not long before the half hour, only for Devon Lee to score on debut on the strike of half time to extend the lead back to fifteen points.

Three converted tries for Wild Geese saw them take the lead going into the final quarter at 26-20, before a Brown try with 15 minutes to go made it 26-25, an exciting finale in store. However, Irish were able to respond immediately to extend back to an eight point gap, before Brown got his brace in the final stages to secure another bonus point.

Irish take all five points and while Grasshoppers will undoubtedly be aggrieved to have lost from a commanding position, two points on the road should provide a tonic of sorts.

OPRFC 27-10 Marlow

OPs eventually took control of their opening day fixture to come away with all five points, despite falling behind to an early Marlow penalty.

There were tries for Mishka Fibbens (2), Damien O'Dwyer and Inder Sohi, Marlow scoring a late consolation having been down to twelve players at one point in the match. The Twisters head to Hemel Hempstead next Saturday, Marlow at home to Aylesbury.

Teddington 46-12 Hemel Hempstead

Teddington ended the first round at the top of the table with a big win against Hemel Hempstead, fly half Bob Beevers coming away with a 21 point haul on their level 6 debut in Bushy Park.

Five penalties and three conversion from Beevers accounted for nearly half of his side's points, tries coming from winger Josh McKiernan, full back Max Aitken who secured a brace, as well as forwards Alfie Ranson and Jack Valentine.

Both sides received yellow cards across the 80 minutes but Camelot's profligacy in terms of giving away penalties cost them dear, travelling back to Hertfordshire bottom.

Teddington will play Grasshoppers away next Saturday as Hemel host Old Priorians.
