Regional 2 Thames Round Up : Gameweek 20

Regional 2 Thames Round Up : Gameweek 20

James Sarek25 Mar - 19:15

Rounding up the weekend's action

The twentieth round of fixtures in Regional 2 Thames took place on Saturday 21st March, with the league champions confirmed, another club assured level 6 rugby for next season, and one who will be in the survival playoffs. Let's take a look the results

Belsize Park 17-26 Brunel University

Brunel were crowned league winners with two games to go as they beat Belsize Park - the only side to beat them all season - in Regent's Park to see them promoted to level 5 at the first attempt.

The university club are now an unassailable fifteen points ahead of their nearest rival Beaconsfield, accruing 97 points from their 20 matches having dropped only three all season ; Belsize move down to fourth having taken nothing from the fixture, and currently have 74 points from 20 games, secure in the knowledge that they will finish in a playoff place but currently none the wiser on their opponents for the first playoff match.

Grasshoppers 42-21 Windsor

Grasshoppers took a giant leap towards safety with a fairly convincing win against Windsor at Syon Lane, as their visitors must now contend with the fact that they will be taking part in the survival playoffs in April.

The hosts established a 21-0 lead through tries from Chris Brown's double and one for Jack Walkenden, Windsor fighting back with a try before the break, then getting to within seven just after the restart.

Another try for Brown to secure his hat trick put Osterley minds at ease, Erin Skinner extending the gap and Blaise Salle finishing the Grasshoppers scoring as Windsor got a third which was scant consolation, 42-21 at full time.

A result which has a huge bearing with regards the bottom half of the table, it takes Grasshoppers up to 46 points from 20 games in 9th place, nine clear of London Irish Wild Geese in 10th who occupy one of the survival playoff spots. Fate very much rests in their own hands, but do face difficult fixtures in the form of Harpenden next week and Irish in the final game of the season.

Windsor - unable to take anything from the game - are in 11th place with 31 points, and are the first team to be sure of taking part in the survival playoff matches and will face one of either London Irish or Grasshoppers in the first playoff match.

Marlow 12-14 London Irish Wild Geese

A low scoring affair saw at Riverwoods Drive saw just 26 points scored and one conversion between the teams as London Irish continue to cling on to their faint hopes of definite survival, while Marlow's promotion playoff ambitions slightly fade with defeat.

Wild Geese were able to overturn a 12-7 half time deficit to take a narrow win, which gives them the smallest of chances of hoisting themselves out of 10th place and into safety in ninth (37 points from 20 games), but will need to beat already relegated Oxford Quins II next week and hope Grasshoppers take nothing from their visit to Harpenden, before facing off with Hoppers in the last round.

Marlow remain in the hunt for the final promotion playoff spot but now lose a tiny bit of ground on Aylesbury and Teddington, their final two fixtures perhaps among the most difficult in the division as they face Brunel and Belsize Park. They have 53 points from their 20 games played.

OPRFC 45-39 Aylesbury

Old Priorians held off a fightback from Aylesbury to climb up to third in the table, the visitors spurning the chance to solidify 5th position as 84 points were scored at Perivale on Saturday afternoon.

OPs went into the break with a 31-12 lead, the tries coming from Kimen Nyam, Barney Morris, Conrad Boe on debut, captain Cathal Sheehan and Ross McIntosh, Dan Thomas and Jack Tominey going over for Aylesbury.

Three unanswered tries via James Atkinson, Garin Nicholls and another for Tominey along with Alex Shearer's conversion and penalty put Aylesbury into the lead for the first time at 32-31, making the most of two yellow cards for the Twisters.

However, Priorians looked dangerous having gone back up to full quota and converted tries for Will Taylor and Funbi Osuntoki handed the onus back to the hosts, Tominey's hat trick try in the final minutes enough to secure a second bonus point in defeat which could prove vital in the final reckonings.

OPRFC move up to 78 points - their most at level 6 - and third place in Regional 2 Thames, while Aylesbury hold a two point advantage over Teddington, remaining in 5th with 57 points.

Oxford Harlequins 21-52 Harpenden

Another week, another loss for Oxford Quins II as Harpenden recorded a half century of points away from home to secure themselves level 6 rugby for another year, though can still mathematically qualify for the promotion playoffs.

Harpenden had the bonus point wrapped up before half time, with four more tries coming in the second half as Jack Francey and Matt Shaw both got braces, 52-21 at full time, Oli Johnson also kicking twelve points for the visitors.

Oxford will now want to avoid an unenviable record of going a full league season without a win, the first time this would have happened in this league (including pre-restructure) since Ruislip went winless in the COVID-19 affected 2019-20 season. They have 13 points after twenty rounds.

Harpenden - who had a bit of mid season slump - have rallied enough in 2026 to see them secure with 48 points, their promotion playoff chances very much out of their hands however as they hope results in the final two rounds go their way.

Teddington 35-46 Beaconsfield

A trademark fightback from Teddington almost saw them pull of a remarkable victory againt Beaconsfield, only for the visitors to pull away and extinguish the threat late on in a high scoring and exciting affair in Bushy Park.

Beaconsfield were 24-0 up before the first quarter was even complete with the bonus point in the bag, but Teddington then scored three tries of their own before half time to make it 24-21 at the break, setting up for a terrific second half of rugby.

Freddie Hooper's penalty and Ethan Horne's five pointer moved Beaconsfield further ahead after the break as it became 34-21, Rory Mercer's converted try reducing arrears to six points once more soon after ; Braiden Broughan's try on the hour for the visitors put daylight between the two sides once more.

Oliver Holland went over for Teddington ten minutes from time with an ensuing conversion to make it 39-35, a tense finale sure to follow ; Rafe Sadleir broke the home side's hearts with a late converted score as the match finished 46-35.

Teddington now have a massive game against Aylesbury next Saturday, who they will overtake with a win, currently sixth on 55 points and just two behind their next opponent with a playoff spot on the line.

Beaconsfield are second with 82 points and are probably favourites to finish runners up with a prime slot for the playoffs, though will be wary of the threat of Belsize Park in round 21.

That completes the round up. For full fixtures, results and the league table, please visit the RFU website :
