The sixteenth round of fixtures in Regional 2 Thames have now been completed - minus one postponement - and we enter the final six games of the season as the league table takes full shape with the approaching playoffs as well as promotion and relegation spots ; let's see what happened this weekend gone.
Belsize Park P-P Aylesbury
The fixture between Belsize Park and Aylesbury, due to take place in Regent's Park, was postponed due to bad weather and has been rearranged to Saturday 7th February.
The cancellation affects both side's league standings, with Belsize moving down to 4th with 57 points from 15 games, while Aylesbury are in 8th with 37 points from 15 games as they look to keep themselves in the playoff race.
Brunel University 99-7 Windsor
Brunel thrashed Windsor to maintain a seven point lead at the top of Regional 2 Thames, the visitors taking a blow to their survival chances as the season enters its latter stages.
Brunel University are already assured of a playoff spot - and have 77 points from 16 games - but will face Beaconsfield and Belsize Park in consecutive weeks in March, which may go some way to deciding whether they ascend to level 5 as champions.
Meanwhile, Windsor find themselves back in a scrap, down to 11th, with 26 points from 16 games, with difficult fixtures coming up but crucial clashes against some of the sides around them following.
Grasshoppers 33-37 Beaconsfield
The game of the weekend came at Syon Lane as Grasshoppers ran Beaconsfield to the wire in a topsy-turvy battle, the visitors doing enough to hold off late pressure from the Osterley outfit and come away with the win.
An exciting first half had Beaconsfield ahead at 24-21, recovering from 21-12 down after Hoppers saw tries scored by James Kent, Aaron Sheehan and Jack Walkenden. Tom Sherwin put the hosts back in the lead early on in the second half after an excellent turnover, but a penalty and two tries for the Buckinghamshire side put them back in control.
Grasshoppers thent went over through Cameron Isenburg to narrow the gap to 37-33 before the hosts launched late attacks, yet were unable to make 5 metre lineouts count and came away with a loss and two bonus points, Beaconsfield maintaining their spot in second with the win.
The two points may well prove to be valuable come the end of the season, Grasshoppers three points ahead of London Irish, with 33 from 16, while Beaconsfield sit on 70 from 16, seven behind Brunel but with still to play each other in the second half of the season.
London Irish Wild Geese 38-29 Harpenden
London Irish recorded back to back wins for the first time this season and hoisted themselves above Windsor, following up their shock victory against Belsize Park last weekend with an impressive five points against Harpenden, whose playoff hopes are dented slight by consecutive losses.
Irish - spearheaded by former Samoa captain Ofisa Treviranus at number 8 - recorded a bonus point win against their Hertfordshire opponents, who still managed to come away with a try bonus. It pushes Wild Geese up to 10th in the table with 30 points from 16 games - now just three behind Grasshoppers - while Harpenden sit seventh with 40 from 16, seven off fifth place Teddington who occupy the final playoff spot.
Marlow 47-24 Teddington
A late season surge for Marlow may be on the cards as they comfortably beat Teddington at Riverwoods Drive, the visitors suffering a fourth loss in five as their form begins to falter.
Teddington had gone ahead early on through Alfie Ransom's try in the sixth minute, then extending that out to 12-3 around the end of the first quarter through Sam Rawsthorne, but four tries and two conversion before half time saw Marlow go into the break with a 27-12 lead.
They then went on to dominate the early stages of the second half to increase the lead by ten points before George Young pulled a try back for Teddington ; Tom Williams got another for the visitors with around a quarter of an hour left to at least give his side a try bonus point, but Marlow had the last laugh and ended the match handsome 47-24 winners.
The victory is a big boost for Marlow's playoff chances and they have 42 points from their 16 games - chasing down Teddington in fifth, with 47 from the same number of games played.
Oxford Harlequins II 19-57 OPRFC
Old Priorians took advantage of the postponed Belsize Park fixture to jump above them in the table into third, securing a comfortable and routine win at Horspath Sports Ground as Oxford Harlequins II were consigned to a sixteenth straight defeat, automatic relegation a near certainty for the league new boys.
There was plenty of early scoring, Raph Mutu going over for OPs in the opening minutes with Quins hitting back from the restart, before Rory Gaffney headed over within the opening ten minutes. The Twisters motored away a little before half time, Barney Morris scoring on his return to 1st XV action and Gaffney getting a brace after he charged down a clearing kick.
Oxford faded in the second half as Priorians ran in five more tries from five different scorers, though a late Quins try did end the match, in vain as they came away with nothing from the fixture.
OPRFC have 58 points from 16 games in third, Oxford in 12th and last place with 11 points from the same number of games and are fifteen points adrift of eleventh place Windsor.
