Gameweek 11 of the Regional 2 Thames season is now complete, and with it the first half of the campaign (save for one fixture). Let's see how the twelve sides in the division got on at the weekend.
Belsize Park 12-43 Beaconsfield
In what was probably the most surprising result of the weekend, Belsize Park ceded ground to Beaconsfield after a heavy home loss to their promotion chasing rivals, the visitors moving six points clear of their Central London counterparts following a 43-12 victory.
Belsize managed to open the scoring before the floodgates opened for Beaconsfield, who are now firmly in second place with 46 points on the board, while Park - unable to take anything from this fixture - are in third with 40, though do have a crucial game in hand (their rearranged fixture against London Irish Wild Geese).
Grasshoppers 38-29 Harpenden
A second half come back from Grasshopper saw them take the spoils at Syon Lane against Harpenden in a well contested tie in West London, the two sides continuing to jostle for position and survival in Regional 2 Thames.
Harpenden held a 24-19 lead at half time as Alexander Bloisi, Tristan Francis, Daniel James and Kian Middleton all crossing, Jack Walkenden scoring twice for Hoppers in the first half as James Kent also managed to touch down. It was hooker Walkenden's day as he then went on to make it four for the afternoon in the second half as Grasshoppers deployed the rolling maul to his advantage and go into a 33-24 lead, Conor Gilmore largely successful with his place kicking.
Noah Bell's try put daylight between the two sides but a try on the hour for Harpenden by Matthew Shaw may have set some nerves jangling, though Grasshoppers did hold out for a bonus point win. They remain in ninth with 22 points, now only one point behind Harpenden who are in eighth on 23.
Marlow 22-45 Brunel University
A strong first half performance from Brunel University allowed them to return to winning ways and keep their lead at the top of the table after last week's loss to Belsize Park, also seeing off a mini comeback by Marlow to run in seven tries in Buckinghamshire.
A 28-8 lead to Brunel at half time was established, Marlow then beginning to make some headway on the scoreboard before Brunel pulled away again in the second half and take all five points. Marlow were unable to secure a try or losing bonus point, which dampens current hopes of a playoff spot, seven points off the pace with 29 points in seventh.
Brunel are six points of their nearest competitors, Beaconsfield, with 52 points from 11 games.
OPRFC 38-19 Windsor
A fairly routine win for Old Priorians saw them move into a playoff spot as they scored six tries against Windsor, who missed a chance to extend their chances of survival in the league.
OPs had established a dominant 31-0 lead (17-0 at half time), captain Cathal Sheehan's brace tucked in between Tom Batt and Rory Gaffney's efforts, along with Michael Jobling who then got a second for himself too. A late fightback from Windsor wasn't enough to get them anything from the match.
The Twisters are now in fifth spot entering the second half of the campaign, 36 points to their name, and their are encouraging signs for Windsor in tenth on a total of 16 points, though they are now six points off league safety and occupy the play-off survival spot.
Oxford Harlequins 14-29 London Irish Wild Geese
London Irish finally broke their duck of victories to leave Oxford Harlequins II stranded at the bottom of the Regional 2 Thames table, Wild Geese taking a bonus point from the first ever league meeting between the two.
Quins are now the only side without a win in the league and face an uphill struggle to stay up, already thirteen points from safety (9 points from 11 games) and may well be targeting fixtures to give them a fighting chance of making the survival playoff ; the win very much bolster's London Irish's chances of achieving the same with the luxury of a game in hand, albeit against Belsize Park. They move on to 13 points from ten games.
Teddington 22-13 Aylesbury
Another week, another top half battle, Teddington coming off the better to give valuable breathing space in what is fast becoming a fascinating race for the playoffs, running in four tries for a bonus point against Aylesbury in Bushey Park.
Josh McKiernan and Alexander Rolph went over to establish a 10-0 lead to the hosts within the first quarter, Alex Shearer slotting two penalties in quick succession around the half hour to cut the lead to four points ; the Antlers responded well and moved further out in front once more through centre Harry Smith's converted try to give them a 17-6 lead at half time.
A low scoring second half saw just two tries - one for each side - Owen Wildgoose securing the maximum for Teddington with around half an hour to play, Liam Beer for Aylesbury with fifteen minutes left, not quite enough to take a losing bonus point from.
The win gives the top six a definite shape as Teddington remain in fourth with 38 points, two ahead of Old Priorians in fifth and five ahead of Aylesbury in sixth with 33 ; Marlow may potentially enter the conversation with a couple of wins as the race for the playoffs becomes more serious as the season progresses.
That ends this week's round up ; here are next weekend's fixtures :
Belsize Park (3) v Oxford Harlequins II (12)
Brunel University (1) v Grasshoppers (9)
Harpenden (8) v Teddington (4)
London Irish Wild Geese (11) v OPRFC (5)
Windsor (10) v Aylesbury (6)
Marlow (7) v Beaconsfield (2)
