Regional 2 Thames : Gameweek 1 Round Up

James Sarek8 Sep - 15:36

Taking a look at the weekend's action

Saturday saw the first round of the 2025/26 Regional 2 Thames fixtures played - we take a look at how the twelve sides in the division got on.

Aylesbury 34-28 Beaconsfield

A real thriller down at Ostler's Lane to kick things off, as Aylesbury snatched a last minute win against their Buckinghamshire rivals Beaconsfield.

The visitors went into an early 8-0 lead, number 8 Braiden Broughan getting the first points of the season for his side, before an Aled Lewis penalty put them further ahead with about 15 minutes played. Aylesbury hit back with three tries in 15 minutes through James Phillips along with a double for winger Matthew Hawes to put themselves in front, Jonathan Baxter getting another for Beaconsfield just before the break to make it 17-15 to the hosts at half time.

Another Lewis penalty and it was 18-17, only for the lead to change hands once more minutes later as Alex Shearer adding one of his own for Aylesbury, who then saw Hawes cross for his hat trick with around 55 minutes played to go 27-18 up.

Broughan got his second of the match for Beaconsfield on the hour, Lewis converting before a penalty with fifteen minutes left gave his team a 28-27 lead, Aylesbury temporarily down to fourteen men with Liam Beer yellow carded.

Back to full complement, an exciting end to the fixture saw Phillips get another, Shearer converting as Aylesbury snatched a 34-28 victory at the death, taking all five points with Beaconsfield able to attain a losing bonus.

Belsize Park 36-15 Marlow

Belsize Park started their their campaign with a fairly routine win against Marlow in Regent's Park, despite solid efforts from Marlow to wrestle the match away from their hosts, edging away in the final stages for a convincing looking victory.

Winger Cameron Laurenson got the scoring underway for the Central London outfit towards the end of the first quarter after a terrific break by full back Michael Laverge, pegged back to 5-5 almost immediately with a successful rolling maul from Marlow leading to a touchdown for debutant Josh Walne.

Belsize forced some form of control in the forwards and then made inroads towards the opposition line, before centre Ben Stanton crashed over near the posts around the half hour , converted for 12-5, which is how it remained until half-time.

It didn't take long for Park to make it three tries for the afternoon, making the most of some poor Marlow defending to eventually go over in the corner which was well converted. Marlow retained hopes of a win through a penalty and a second for Walne as it became 19-15 with an hour played.

Belsize put another three on the board with ten to go having just been denied a try by some excellent last-ditch tackling, and made sure of victory in the final five with two late tries, ending the match 36-15 winners.

Belsize Park take five points, Marlow leave empty handed.

Brunel University 53-34 Oxford Harlequins II

The highest scoring match of the weekend was in Uxbridge as two of the league's newboys clashed, Brunel posting half a century against Oxford Quins II.

A commanding 33-7 half time lead became 53-34 at full time with the result never really in doubt as Brunel pushed their credentials as one of the pre-season promotion favourites, among one of the best resourced clubs in the division thanks to their partnership with Ealing Trailfinders.

Brunel gained maximum points, Quins putting enough points on the board in the second half to take a try bonus point.

Grasshoppers 42-35 London Irish Wild Geese

Grasshoppers cemented their reputation as the entertainers of Regional 2 Thames with a thoroughly exciting 42-35 victory at home to London Irish Wild Geese.

Irish held a 28-12 lead at half time, the evergreen Chris Brown securing a first half double to just about keep Hoppers in the tie ; a delay to the game following an injury appeared to hand momentum to Grasshoppers who pulled it back to 27-28 via tries from Aaron Sheehan and Louis Dunn, as well as a conversion and penalty from Charlie Lecuyer.

Brown made it a hat trick to put the home side ahead for the first time, only for a quick response from Wild Geese, 34-35 in the latter stages. However, a strong late showing saw Lecuyer slot a penalty and Sheehan grab a second to end the game 42-35 to Grasshoppers.

Five points to the hosts, London Irish taking two by virtue of four tries and a losing bonus.

Harpenden 36-21 OPRFC

A game litted with mistakes saw Harpenden take the spoils at Redbourn Lane, home winger Zeph Nkomo scoring a hat trick as they adjust to life at Level 6.

Starting much the better, Harpenden took a 19-0 lead just beyond the first quarter, Nkomo the first to score, followed by tries for hooker Kian Middleton then an interception by Luca Bruzas putting daylight between them and OPs.

David Howe got the first Twisters points of the season 31 minutes in and reduce the deficit to 19-7, only for Nkomo (61') and Archie Wilson (65') take the game away from Priorians, who finished strong with two tries for Cathal Sheehan sandwiching Nkomo's third.

A valuable five points for Harpenden, while OPs took nothing back to Perivale.

Windsor 12-31 Teddington

Windsor - back in the division following their promotion from level 7 - were beaten at home by Teddington despite taking an early lead.

The sixth minute try for the hosts was the sole score up until and beyond the 40 minute mark, before Teddington dominated second half proceedings, running in five tries from five different scorers (Smith, Williams, Mercer, Ransom, Aitken) with Windsor getting one back but much in vain.

Teddington take five points and are in the top half of the table after one game, Windsor second bottom.
