As you may have seen, David Howe was installed as first team captain for 2022/23 recently, getting off to a winning start last weekend.
We asked David a few questions about his life in rugby.
First of all, congratulations on the captaincy! Tell us a bit more about your experiences in rugby - when you started playing, when you joined OPRFC?
Rugby has always been part of my family, with my dad playing semi-professionally and my mum a keen supporter. I personally started when I was 12, playing both for St Benedict’s and my club at the time, Wasps FC. I went on to play for the 1st XV and joined OPRFC straight after school at 18 years old.
What are your highest and lowest points as a player?
Lowest point was the year of relegation from London 1 to London 2. Very tough year for us with a huge amount of injuries and unavailability.
Highest points have been our promotion last year, amazing home wins against the likes of Tring, Colchester, Eton Manor and an away win against North Walsham, although I hope the best is still to come.
Do you have any personal goals for the 2022/23 season? And what do you feel you bring to the captain's role?
Personal goals as a prop tends to be built around a strong scrum, a functioning lineout, and hitting lots of rucks and mauls but my aim is to bring energy to my carrying and defensive side.
As a captain, most of my leadership will be done through my commitment and work rate on and off the field. I believe that my stewardship under the senior boys has put me in a good stead for the captaincy role and am hoping to bring a clear and steady head (referees dependant).
What are you expecting from the coming season in Regional 2 Thames?
A tough season with all teams out to prove a point and win this inaugural league. I reckon a lot of games will be decided by small margins.
What predictions do you have for the club this year?
I expect us to continue turning Perivale back into the fortress it once was and aim for back to back promotions.
