Match Report : OPRFC Saints 42-5 Grasshoppers II

Saints brush rivals aside

Old Priorian Saints avenged defeat to Grasshoppers II earlier in the season with a comprehensive 42-5 win at Perivale against the same opponents, running in six tries in an excellent team performance.

Able to dominate from the early stages of the game, the Saints went ahead through winger Zak Bondarenko's try, beating the Grasshoppers back for pace and power and make it two for the season, Theo Morris converting well on the angle to make it 7-0 in the early stages. On the other wing, Timmy Oyinlola then doubled the try count with an intelligent run that drew defenders in, the trajectory of his movement crucial to the score.

With OPs taking charge of the scrum set piece, they were able to put Grasshoppers under tremendous pressure and forced them to play the bulk of the first forty minutes in their own half, with the likes of Will Poyntz, Elvin Grant and Charlie Page among others all making good yardage. Another foray into the 22 set Morris up under the posts as the waves parted for him to canter in for his fifth try of the season, converting his own effort as OPRFC went into a 21-0 lead. James Sarek slid in from very short range on the stroke of half time with the Saints now 28-0 up.

The second half was more even, the rain affected pitch becoming increasingly boggy and making life slightly more difficult to both sides. Grasshoppers finally got themselves on the scoresheet through a very well worked scrum set piece, catching the would be defence by surprise and taking the blindside, an inside pass from the winger finishing a fine move.

However, the Osterley outfit weren't able to bring themselves back into the tie and OPs continued to control the fixture, Dan Michael easing in after the ball went wide, followed by Ryan Garvie's tap and go, selling a dummy before dotting down with a strong reach for the line. Morris was perfect in terms of conversions, 42-5 the final score at St Benedict's Playing Field.

An excellent 80 minutes for OPRFC, this was probably the most cohesive performance by the 2nd XV this season ; there were opportunities to score more tries on the day and perhaps a little patience needs exacting in the final phases, but otherwise there were manifold positives to take away from this match. Big credit should also go to Grasshoppers who defended manfully and were able to hold the ball up on the line more than once to prevent further damage to the scoreboard.

Priorians take seven points from the fixture and move into 7th place in Middlesex Merit Table Division 1 with three games remaining, heading to South-West London next Saturday to take on London Welsh Dragons.
