Match Report : OPRFC 6-26 Amersham & Chiltern

James Sarek18 Feb 2023 - 20:23

Twisters lose out to superior Amersham

A late flurry of tries from Amersham and Chiltern gave them a deserved victory over Old Priorians, who were deprived of a losing bonus point in a scrappy game as part of a Perivale double header.

The early pressure came from OPs, pinning Amersham back on their own line with Will Clarke - who had already kicked four points for the Saints - adding three more to his name with a penalty.

A very low scoring first half, Chiltern saw much more of the ball and looked the more likely to score, despite ventures into the opposition 22 from OPRFC. The visitors made it count after 25 minutes, a patient build up leading to a close range try under the posts, easily converted for a 7-3 lead.

Tactical ping-pong ensued, both defences holding strong with the territorial battle having no clear winner ; Amersham probably edged the first half on balance and went into the break with a four points advantage.

A similar pattern developed within the first quarter of the second half, the visitors once again having the general rub of the green but lacking execution in the crucial moments. Clarke missed a penalty just past the hour mark that would have brought the Twisters to within one point, but made amends ten minutes later, 7-6 to Amersham as the last ten minutes closed in.

This is where the Buckinghamshire side began to accelerate. Becoming dominant in the scrums, they ran a tiring OPs backline ragged and achieved a try bonus point through three further tries, working the ball wide time and again as well as utilizing their strong runners in the forwards.

Scores on 72', 78' and 79' led to victory for the promotion hopefuls, who will be buoyed by a loss for second place Cobham away at Old Haberdashers.

OPs ought not have too many complaints about the loss and did well to keep in touch as late as 70 minutes in, perhaps hamstrung by positional changes and the physicality of Chiltern.

A single point in the last two fixtures versus Windsor and Beaconsfield will see the Twisters finish the season with both a best positional finish and a record points tally, their next game away to the latter in two weeks.
