Twisters thrash Wild Geese

A stellar first half display from Old Priorians set the foundation for a thumping win against London Irish Wild Geese, running in seven tries in the first 40 minutes before ending up 61-33 victors at Perivale.

Early tries for Barney Morris and Tom Batt put OPs 14-0 up within the first ten minutes of play ; more good work by Batt saw him snaffle the ball from an Irish lineout, with Michael Jobling taking the ball forward before Cathal Sheehan finished the move for a team third of the day towards the end of the first quarter.

Wild Geese got their first points on the board not long after the restart, kicking deep into the 22 from a penalty then rolling a maul from a lineout to get over the line, converted to make it 19-7. The Twisters reextended their lead through scrum half Rory Gaffney towards the half hour as Priorians took their first try bonus point of the season.

Relentless attack from OPs saw three more converted tries in the first half - two while down to thirteen men through two yellow cards - Kimen Nyam's length of the pitch effort the pick of the bunch, Guy Djedje and Charlie Harte on debut also getting in on the action, Irish also dotting down for a 47-14 half time scoreline.

London Irish had the better of the second half, pulling the score back to 47-26, but another try for Gaffney and a first for the 1st XV for Timmy Oyinlola took the Priorians points past 60 (Michael Jobling ending with 16 points from the boot after converting 8 from 9), Wild Geese getting a consolation at the death to end the fixture 61-33.

An awesome performance going forward from Priorians will instil a great deal of confidence into a young squad who were - overall - second best against Harpenden last week, especially against a side who have caused them problems in past encounters.

A first league meeting with Brunel University awaits OPRFC next Saturday afternoon.
