Saints fall short in Borough Derby

Ealing 1871 avenged defeat at Perivale earlier in the season with a deserved win against Old Priorians Saints, who fell to a disappointing loss at Vallis Way.

OPs spurned the chance to take a first minute lead with a penalty going wide of the post, with Ealing then settling into the flow of their game. A Saints penalty allowed 1871 to advance deep into enemy territory, utilising their large forwards to gain ground before heading wide and breaching the opposition defence for the first score of the day.

They pulled off a similar move soon after, a more straightforward effort with the rolling maul unstoppable from ten metres to bring about a second try of the afternoon, converted to make it 12-0. However, the Saints still offered threat, and a foray into the 22 from hooker Wilf Hoskyns set up Stefan Tsang for his first try for the club, especially poignant given a long injury lay off. McBride made no mistake with his conversion.

A further three points were added by OPRFC before the break to make it 12-10 at half time, but a distastrous start to the second half saw Ealing score almost immediately from kick off, pouncing on the bouncing ball and catching the visitors unawares to reestablish their advantage.

A general failure from OPs to adapt their gameplan - along with a sense of domination from 1871 in the scrums - gifted Trailfinders a number of tries to truly take the game away from Priorians, running in three further scores before a strong last ten minutes from the Saints yielded a try for James Porter, continuing to attack before the final whistle but to no avail.

Ealing certainly deserved their victory but there is a sense that OPs could have kept themselves in the contest with better game management and a different tactical approach. The result moves 1871 above Priorians in the table who now slip to seventh.
