Rounding up the league action

With the weather once again leading to a number of postponements of rugby matches up and down Britain within the past two weeks, we look back at Gameweeks 17 and 18 in Regional 2 Thames.

Gameweek 17

Aylesbury 31-43 Hammersmith & Fulham

Aylesbury put up a good fight against Hammersmith and Fulham, but the pacesetters were able to pull away to record a win against the in-form Buckinghamshire side.

An entertaining fixture by all means, Hammersmith went into the break 24-17 up, before pulling away in the second to take all five points back to West London. Aylesbury were unlucky not to get a second losing bonus point but did take a bonus for scoring four tries.

The result ended Aylesbury's six match winning streak and extended Hammersmith's lead at the top of the table.

Old Priorians 34-35 London Irish Wild Geese

Wild Geese stole the points in dramatic fashion at Perivale, a last minute Eamonn Atkinson try followed by a conversion the difference between the two sides as the Twisters fell at the final hurdle again this season.

Level at 17-17 at half time, Tomas Wood's try on 60 minutes (his second of the day) along with a Ross McIntosh conversion took the score to 34-25 to pull OPs away into relative security, before Irish pegged it back to one score with a penalty 70 minutes in following a yellow card for OPRFC back rower Sean McAteer.

Heavy pressure and a number of penalties in the final stages saw Geese advance deep into OPs territory, Atkinson the one to eventually crash over under the posts as the clock ticked down to zero, the fairly easy conversion kicked and the visitors took the win.

Despite the loss, Old Priorians moved up to second by virtue of the bulk of the league having their games postponed.

Gameweek 18

Aylesbury 24-35 London Cornish

London Cornish ended a losing streak of seven matches with a vital victory away to Aylesbury - the last team they beat before their poor run of form.

The hosts were playing their fourth consecutive home game with Cornish on the road for the sixth game in a row, and it was the visitors who raced into a 10-0 lead, Robert Mackay opening the scoring on 3 minutes with George Kimmins adding a conversion and penalty to the board.

They went further ahead at the end of the first quarter through a converted Mike Edworthy effort before Aylesbury scrum half Will Andrews crossed almost immediately after, yet Kimmins added a try to his good work with the boot on the half hour, following up with a penalty on 37 minutes. Kazeem Olayinka's try and Alex Shearer's conversion for the home side made it 25-12 at half time.

A competitive second half saw Aylesbury start the better to make it 25-17, yet Cornish held fast and pulled away, Mark Osei-Tutu scoring their only try of the second half with Kimmins adding more to his tally with another conversion and penalty for a haul of 20 points. Olayinka got a second try, enough for one bonus point but not for two.

An invaluable win for Cornish who were in danger of sliding into a relegation scrap, it takes them to 38 points from 16 games, currently in 8th place. Aylesbury's general good form sees their total up to 45 points with 17 games played, occupying 6th place in the league.

Belsize Park 10-9 Beaconsfield

A low scoring affair in the battle of the Bs, Belsize Park edging out Beaconsfield in Regent's Park for their seventh win of the season.

Belsize retain 7th, level with Cornish on 38 points but ahead by virtue of points difference, with two games in hand on some of the other teams in the league having played 15 games so far. Similarly, Beaconsfield have also played 15 matches but find themselves in 11th position with 23 points and currently look as if they may be going down, subject to the vagaries of relegation this year.

Cobham 34-26 London Irish Wild Geese

The league's form team made it 10 wins from 10 with a home victory against Wild Geese, who were unable to follow up an excellent win against Old Priorians last week.

Ahead 19-7 after 40 minutes thanks to tries from Max McDonald, Jamie Yorke and Ryan Saunders (the last of these making his 100th appearance) along with two conversions, Cobham then went even further ahead in the second half, Will Stephen's penalty and Andrew Murphy's converted try making it fairly comfortable at 29-7.

Irish responded with two tries to make it 29-19 yet any hopes of another dramatic comeback were dashed six minutes from time, Dave Stewart getting the vital extra score for Cobham. The travelling side did score once more before full time to secure a bonus point for a full time score of 34-26.

Cobham now find themselves with an outside chance of taking the one promotion spot, being as it is that they have 58 points from their 15 games and in second place, a game in hand over Hammersmith and Fulham at the top and playing each other in late February.

Wild Geese are in 5th after 17 games, near enough mathematically safe from going down and virtually the same in terms of any distant hopes of going up, 47 points gained.

Fullerians 27-33 Amersham and Chiltern

A dramatic finish at Coningesby Drive in Watford, Amersham and Chiltern stealing the win at the death against Fullerians.

Amersham scored almost immediately but a Dan Evans penalty on five minutes made it 5-3, with Fullerians then taking the lead thanks to Kieran Cavanagh's try, which was convered for 10-5. Amersham hit back with two more tries before half time for a 19-10 lead at the break.

Another Evans penalty reduced arrears to 19-13 early in the second half but then Chiltern began to pull away, a try on 50 minutes making it 26-13. Undeterred, Fullerians got themselves back into the fixture and retook the lead with just three minutes to go, Sam Harrison's converted try added to an earlier penaltry try - Fullers leading 27-26.

Unfortunately they couldn't hold out for what would have been an excellent win as Amersham were able to get the match winning try in the last minute, converted to give them a 33-27 away win.

The victory means Amersham keep themselves in the hunt for the top four and beyond, 55 points taken from their 15 games and currently in 4th. Fullerians have also played 15 games but are in 9th position with 31 points, four ahead of Old Haberdashers in 10th.

Old Haberdashers 26-10 Windsor

In a game that may well have a large bearing on who stays up and who goes down in Regional 2 Thames, it was Old Haberdashers who took the vital win away from the London/Hertfordshire borders.

This keeps them in 10th place with 27 points from 16 games and may yet avoid going down yet this will come down to how many are relegated from R2T ; Windsor certainly look more likely to do so, 18 points taken from 16 games in 12th and last place.

Old Priorians 11-10 Hammersmith & Fulham

Hammersmith were dealt a small blow to their promotion credentials as rivals Old Priorians secured a famous win at Perivale, Ross McIntosh knocking over the decisive penalty late into the match.

OPs had gone into an 8-0 lead through an early McIntosh penalty and a Matt Ilube try, the Hammers getting their first points around the hour to make the deficit just one point at 8-7. A long range Joe Carolan penalty saw the leaders finally move into the ascendancy yet it was short lived, conceding one themselves almost immediately from the restart.

McIntosh stepped up and converted, before the Twisters held off late pressure to inflict just a second loss of the season on Hammersmith.

Despite the victory, OPs move down to 3rd, unable to take any bonus points from the fixture, level on 58 points with Cobham and 17 games played. Hammersmith still hold a healthy lead of 13 points at the top - 71 points taken from 16 games - yet may now find themselves in a fight for the promotion spot with Cobham who have a game in hand on them, yet to play each other too.
